The Developement of the Neighborhood
After the death of Samuel Edgar in 1874, his lands were availiable for prospective home owners. Certain parcels were platted for developement while others were retained. By this time there was constant traffic up and down Wayne Ave via the Wayne Ave and Fifth Street Railroad which was nothing more than a horse drawn trolly which Samuel Edgar helped to establish in 1871 to transport people from the city to the state asylum at the top of the hill which was built in 1855 on land that Samuel Edgar and others donated to the state of Ohio.
Some homes were more fancy than others. The homes that Samuel built for his daughters were extensively modified by 1890. Samuel's home was also modified by Herman Volkenand in 1887. Below are pictures of some of these houses as they look now or in their fullest glory.
